7 Must Know (FREE) Biology Resources

If you are teaching biology for the first time or even if you are a veteran biology teacher, you need to keep reading!

During my first year of teaching biology, I wish I knew these 7 FREE resources sooner. Yes, I said it, these are ALL free sites that have been so helpful in my curriculum.

1. HHMI Biointeractive

This site not only has credible information, but it also has pre-made lesson plans that feature documentaries AND supplementary activities for your students. (Even including a teacher’s guide and answer keys!)

I personally used their evolution unit where I had my students view a video regarding Darwinโ€™s finches and natural selection. For my Grade 12 class, my students explored the concept of models population growth with a stimulation on exponential growth as well as logistic growth.

2. YouTube Channel: Amoeba Sister

I am sure you are no stranger to this YouTube channel. I honestly love it so much. My students always enjoy their videos. This is especially great for visual learners. The videos helped them to visualize some of the more challenging concepts in class.

Now, this is not even the best part. They offer free resources like worksheets that go along with their videos! Check them out here: https://www.amoebasisters.com/handouts.html

3. Government of Canada

To my fellow Canadian teacher friends, I must say I never realized that there are some educational resources for science teachers. If you never heard of that, make sure you check them out. It looks like they offer some interactive activity ideas!

4. TVO Learn

Another awesome resource for my fellow Ontarian educators! This site contains all sorts of courses and grades as well. So if you are looking for more engaging and relevant materials or videos that align with the Ontario curriculum, this is for you!

5. Khan Academy

You might have came across this super helpful resource already but I have to include it here. I find the content more detailed for most high school level courses. With that said, I think this is great for teachers/educators if they need a quick refresher on a specific topic before they teach a class. This is also great for students who are curious and just like to learn more!

6. TED-Ed

TED Ed offers some very high end animation for some science related topics. Some of them even include a follow up quiz which is a great tool for informal assessment. This was so helpful when I was teaching online because it was just so easy to embed the video on Google Classroom and assess students all in one place.

7. Biorender

This resource is amazing if you are looking for some high quality clip art or diagrams in your lessons or PowerPoint! These are made by scientists and scholars so the representations are very accurate. The best part is the resolution is so high that it makes your lesson very polished and professional looking.

The site offer a free account option if you donโ€™t mind not exceeding the 5 templates limit. I personally can live with that and donโ€™t find that troubling.

Save this for future!

If you would like to save this for the new school year, click HERE to get a copy of a growing list of curated list of resources from myself and other fellow biology educators.
