Monster Protein Synthesis Activity

I found this awesome resource online and tried it out with my Grade 12 students. It went so well and my class had a blast designing their monster.

This activity is great if you are looking for a fun way to reinforce the transcription and translation concepts in the molecular genetic unit. I used this after I finished teaching about gene expression and it was a super awesome way to apply their learning. Who doesn’t love an educational and fun activity?!

I divided the class into groups of 3 and told them to work together to synthesize a monster of their own.

Pro tip: Laminate the second page of the handout for each group. The students got to choose a random allele for each physical trait. The point is they have no idea what their monster would look like.
Students used the DNA sequences and transcribed them into its respective mRNA. Then, they used this codon chart to decode what the amino acid would be and find out what the physical trait is.

Use the “data sheet” to record their mRNA and amino acid.
My students’ final product!

I would highly recommend this activity. The classroom was full of laughters and engaged students! 😀 Give it a go and let me know how it goes. Have fun!

Blessings,

Mrs. T
